Abortion divides society? Poles are mostly on the same page
Poles responded to a question on legal abortion in the latest poll by the Institute for Public Affairs Research (IBSP) for the "StanPolityki" website. Similar data was collected from both large cities and rural areas.
The topic of abortion in Poland resurfaces regularly and women do not stop fighting for their rights. The slogan "Ani jedna więcej" ("Not even one woman more") is stimulating the protests and marches, and with each successive demonstration it gains more and more importance. Despite tightening of abortion laws, activists do not stop educating Poles on the subject.

We would like to remind you that abortion in Poland is currently legal only in two cases:
- when the woman's life or health is endangered by the continuation of pregnancy,
- when the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act (i.e. rape or incestuous intercourse).
The new legislation came into force after the Constitutional Court ruling in 2021. There is a certain "loophole" that can be used to circumvent the new restrictions, however. Performing an abortion for any reason other than the two aforementioned up to the 12th week of the life of the foetus is still legal provided that the woman performs it herself. But, as we’ve learned recently, officers of the law have the ability to enforce "assistance" in the procedure.
Abortion in Poland. What do Poles think about it?
In spite of what you and the ruling party might expect, as many as 56.73% of those taking part in the IBSP survey believe that women should have the right to terminate their pregnancy up to the 12th week, regardless of the reason. 28.17% chose the answer "definitely yes", 17.27% - just "yes", and 11.29% - "probably yes".
34 per cent of respondents are against legal abortion regardless of the reason. 16.83% chose "definitely not" as their answer, while 7.93% - just "no", and 9.24% - "probably not".
Nearly 10% of respondents still have no opinion on the subject and chose the answer "neither yes nor no".
Poles on abortion: does place of residence influence the attitude?
The survey by the Institute for Public Affairs Research for the "StanPolityki" website took into account the place of residence of the respondents. It found that urban and rural residents were unanimous and in the majority in favour of the legality of abortion. However, the results confirm that it is those from larger agglomerations who are more likely to support the idea of abortion regardless of the reason. The poll showed that:
- 50.57% of those living in rural areas support the legalisation of abortion,
- 39.49% of those living in rural areas are strongly against the relaxation of abortion laws,
- almost one in 10 people living in rural areas has no opinion on legal abortion,
- 66.9% of those living in cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants support legalising abortion,
- 25.82% of those living in cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants are strongly against the relaxation of abortion laws,
- 7.28% of those living in cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants have no opinion on legal abortion.
The results of the survey are very similar to that from 2022. At that time, 56.11 per cent of respondents were in favour of legal abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy, 34.95 per cent were against, while 8.94 per cent of respondents did not indicate a clear answer.
