Euthanasia is a practice of intentionally ending life of a sick and suffering person at their request. In Poland such a procedure is considered murder on demand and cannot be carried out. However in some other countries euthanasia is legally allowed. One of them is Australia, where recently an unusually young woman was euthanized per her request.

Lily Thai, a 23-year-old Australian, suffered from an autoimmune disease. As the Daily Mail reports, it was autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG) and the symptoms appeared when she was a teenager. At first doctors didn't know what was happening to Lily, and her condition deteriorated dramatically.

From then on, the woman was bed-bound and fed through a tube as the illness was ravaging her body. Lily experienced immense pain every day and for this reason, in June 2023, she signed all the documents needed for euthanasia.

She was only 23 years old and decided to be euthanized

Lily was only 23 years old, but she understood that she couldn’t be cured and made a decision difficult both to her and her family. Lily's mum had to leave the room because she felt it was too much for her.

In her final moments the woman was accompanied by her family and a friend. She spent that time on the beach facing the sea, eating a meal from McDonald's.

"I will miss her very much. Lily is a truly beautiful person. We were lucky to have her in our lives," a friend of Lily's said, as quoted by Antyradio.

Lily took her last breath at a hospital in Adelaide, Australia, and passed away on 21 June 2023, the date she chose herself. Before her death she wrote farewell letters and also planned what her funeral would look like.
