Irish teacher Enoch Burke, who specialises in German, has once again made headlines following his refusal to address a transgender student by their preferred pronouns. Burke has now been sentenced for a third time.

The case of Enoch Burke may seem highly unusual. While we have to acknowledge the challenges faced by non-binary and transgender individuals dealing with dysphoria and societal rejection, it remains difficult to support arrests over the use of incorrect pronouns.

However, it is important to clarify that no arrests have been made solely for misusing pronouns. This narrative is being pushed by right-wing activists and conservative media, aiming to stir fear and outrage over what they describe as the ‘threat of gender ideology’.

Conflict with a student? Teacher arrested

Irish teacher Enoch Burke has indeed been arrested on three separate occasions, though these incidents stemmed from his refusal to comply with the consequences of his prior actions. Burke consistently refused to use gender-neutral pronouns with a transgender student, leading to his suspension in 2022 by the then headmaster of Wilson's Hospital School in County Westmeath. He defended his actions, citing his religious beliefs.

Despite the suspension, Burke continued to attend the school. This led to a court case and the issuance of a restraining order barring him from entering the school grounds. In September 2022, he was first sent to Mountjoy Prison for contempt of court and again in September 2023 for violating the court order by returning to the school. He was later released on parole under the condition that he would no longer visit Wilson's Hospital School.

Transphobic teacher jailed again

Burke was released from prison in June this year after serving over 400 days. Upon his release, the judge reminded him that the restraining order barring him from Wilson's Hospital School remained in effect. Despite the severity of his punishment, did Burke learn anything? Apparently not.

On Monday, 2 September, he was arrested again outside Wilson's Hospital School. He was subsequently taken to court and, for the third time, sentenced to return to Mountjoy Prison.

"This is a mockery of justice," Burke declared during the trial, arguing that the ruling violated his freedom of speech, his religious rights, and his belief that there are only two sexes.
