The Minister of Health of Romania, Alexandru Rafila, announced on September 28 that boys up to and including 18 years of age will be able to receive the HPV vaccine for free, just like girls, according to Agerpres.

"By the end of the year, we will introduce the HPV vaccine to the same reimbursement system. The big news is that boys up to and including 18 years of age, will also have the right to be vaccinated for free, just like girls, and women between the ages of 19 and 45 can receive a 50% discount or reimbursement for this vaccine, which I believe will greatly increase access to vaccination. There is a lot of interest", the minister stated at a conference.

Regarding the flu vaccination, the minister said that immunization in pharmacies significantly reduces bureaucracy, making the process easier.

"On October 1, this new methodology will begin. We start with the flu vaccine. It is standard practice for a seasonal vaccine, and should the vaccine become available in pharmacies, individuals at risk can receive full reimbursement with a prescription. It's a step forward. Administering vaccinations in pharmacies has the potential to significantly streamline processes and alleviate the issues that previously arose when the Ministry of Health procured vaccines, sent them to public health offices, and family physicians collected them from those offices. This entire process has disappeared. People receive a medical prescription, go to the pharmacy, pick up the flu vaccine and either return to their family doctor to administer it, or they can benefit from vaccination in pharmacies that have joined this program, which is expanding rapidly as pharmacists are trained in vaccination", Rafila explained.

According to the Minister of Health, the vaccination program for children will continue as before.

"The vaccination program for children remains the same as it has been until now because we need to have a guarantee of distribution and administration there", Alexandru Rafila stated.

He mentioned that the purchase of the antiviral drug Paxlovid used to treat new coronavirus infections will be concluded.

"We will now conclude the purchase of an antiviral that can be used in the infection with the new coronavirus, Paxlovid, and obviously the cases that require this medication, not for everyone. Antiviral treatment involves certain limitations", the Minister of Health added.
