The President of Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu provided new details on the 2nd of September about the "drastic measures" that will be applied in the near future to sanction drivers who drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

As a result, those caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will no longer be able to drive a car for a period of 10 years.

Additionally, the vehicle used at the time of the offense could be confiscated by the police.

"Steps will be taken for individuals who drive vehicles while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, including severe measures and suggestions proposed by colleagues. These measures may include a minimum 10-year suspension of your driving privileges if you are caught in such a situation, and even the potential confiscation of the vehicle you were using when the offense occurred" - stated Marcel Ciolacu.

Earlier that week, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, announced that he was considering the possibility of drug testing students in schools.

Prime Minister Ciolacu now stated that it is necessary to create a legal framework that allows parents to "request authorities, family doctors, for a possible testing of the minor, and the state to cover these expenses".

"If I, as a parent, am concerned and have no way of knowing whether my child is using drugs or not, I turn to the authorities and state institutions. I believe this is the right approach", said the Prime Minister.
