In 1655, Jasna Góra Monastery repelled Swedish troops invasion. Almost four hundred years later the place has to face another threat – rainbow-coloured stripes on a street. Conservative groups are mobilising.

The civic budget of Częstochowa includes a proposal that has caused great controversy. The idea is to paint the pedestrian crossings between Third Avenue and Sienkiewicz Avenue leading to Jasna Góra in the colours of the rainbow.

In his justification the initiator of the proposal wrote that the initiative would signify "a sign of support for the LGBT+ community". The proposal has only passed preliminary verification. Only on 1 September will it become clear whether the project will be voted for by the citizens of Częstochowa. That was all it took to start the vilification of the rainbow community.

Częstochowa confronts rainbow zebra crossings

Jasna Góra is most fiercely defended by Artur Dąbrowski, the president of Akcja Katolicka (a Catholic oganization) in Częstochowa. The man became famous for organising national Catholic forces to defend Jasna Góra against participants in equality marches.

Dąbrowski asked Deputy Minister of Justice Piotr Cieplucha, a politician of Suwerenna Polska (Polish right-wing political party), what he thought of the rainbow stripes project. Cieplucha, as a reminder, is a politician that suggests in a viral video that opposition politicians should be shot. What could he possibly have said about the rainbow crossing?

"This is a scandal. It is a blatant provocation of LGBT+ circles which promote Marxist ideology. The rainbow is also a symbol of God's covenant with people, but unfortunately today it is a symbol that promotes the groups who are trying to introduce LGBT+ ideology, that are trying to destroy the family as the basic cell of society," said Cieplucha, quoted by "Gazeta Wyborcza".

Częstochowa will assess rainbow crossings

City spokesman Włodzimierz Tutaj joined the emotional discussion. The man confirmed that the proposal for rainbow pedestrian crossings is being assessed.

"The mere submission of a proposal for a rainbow crossing does not automatically mean that it will be put to a vote, as the initiative must comply with the law. In this case the law which specifies the elements that are important for pedestrian safety in traffic," said Tutaj.
