On Monday, 15 July, the Romanian government announced a decision to cull several hundred bears, citing concerns over an uncontrolled population. The Minister for the Environment stated that the growing number of these mammals necessitates immediate action. The culling is set to commence shortly, marking the beginning of sanctioned hunting for these large animals.

The Romanian government has decided to organise a bear cull following a tragic incident. On Monday, 15 July, officials approved the culling of nearly 500 bears after a 19-year-old girl was fatally attacked by one of the animals. This measure aims to address what the Minister for the Environment describes as an uncontrolled bear population deemed necessary for the safety of citizens.

Romania has conducted bear culls before, but this year’s numbers will more than double the previous figures. In 2023, 220 bears were culled; this year, park rangers are set to hunt 481 bears. The government asserts that this drastic increase is essential to protect the public.

Romanian government has decided to cull bears

On Monday, 15 July, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu summoned an emergency session of parliament in response to the recent tragic events on the Jepii Mici trail. The session was called following a bear attack on Tuesday, 9 July, which resulted in the death of a 19-year-old girl who was hiking in the area. Witnesses reported that the bear had dragged the victim after grabbing her by the leg. Despite her attempt to call emergency services, the woman could not be saved.

The attack has deeply shaken Romanian citizens, prompting the government to adopt a law regarding the culling of dangerous animals. Proponents of the law argued that the growing bear population has contributed to an increase in such incidents. However, not all supported the measure. Critics emphasised the importance of preventing bear attacks through measures other than culling, advocating for alternative methods to ensure public safety.
