Tiktokers apply beer to speed up tanning. Another dangerous trend on the platform
Why pour beer on your skin while at the beach? More and more young people believe that it helps getting a quicker tan. That’s another dangerous trend on TikTok that, unfortunately, may appeal to Zoomers.
What do we risk if we decide to rub beer on our bodies at the beach? Are there any natural sun care products? And can raspberry oil protect us from UV rays? The answers to these questions are more important than you think.

Beer for faster tanning - a new trend on TikTok
Applying SPF (sun protection factor) cream, especially applying it to the face, is recommended all year round. Unfortunately, during the summer, many people choose cosmetics that speed up the process of tanning instead of protecting themselves against sunburn and skin cancer.
In drugstores we can find creams and sprays that will make our skin turn brown faster, but TikTok users have decided to promote an alternative and cheaper way. They apply beer on their bodies to speed up tanning. They argue that this will give them "the best tan ever", and that hops, which supposedly boosts melanin production, would be responsible for this effect.
Doctors and experts naturally warn against using this method. Not only do we put ourselves at risk of worms visiting our body and sand sticking to us, but pouring beer on our skin puts us at risk of a stroke or skin cancer.
"Tan-seekers of all kinds are at serious risk of developing all types of skin cancer and burning of the skin is strongly linked to the development of melanoma – the most serious life-threatening form of the disease.
"Furthermore, chances to develop skin cancer are disproportionately high in young adults and it is one of the biggest killing cancers in the 15 to 34 age group – the same age group that uses this social platform more than any other," Kathryn Clifford, founder of the skin cancer prevention charity, warns in the NY Post.
Harmful natural tanning methods
You may not know this, but every tan is actually a burn. Damaging your skin this way will not only make it turn red but, in the process, accelerates the possibility of getting skin cancer and wrinkles.
Unfortunately, even people who want to protect themselves from the sun are now looking for alternative and "natural" ways to do so. They recommend using raspberry oil and claim that it protects against UV rays. Meanwhile, in an interview with PAP (Polish Press Agency), an oncologist stressed that there are no scientific studies that prove this effect.
So if you want to protect yourself from the harmful effects of exposing your skin to sunrays, we recommend using SPF cosmetics. There are really plenty of them on the market nowadays and everyone can find something at a reasonable price. Just don't forget that as well as using sunscreens, it is also important to apply their right amount.
